The Federal Government has announced that the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will now be named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a media briefing, where he said the decision was reached by the leadership and staff of the Federal Ministry of Works.
According to Umahi, the coastal highway was inspired by a vision President Tinubu conceived about 27 years ago, long before assuming office as Nigeria’s president.
“By the power conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Works, and in consultation with the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, the directors and the entire staff of the ministry, we have decided to name the entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This is a dream that Mr President had about 27 years ago,” Umahi said.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the flagship infrastructure projects of the Tinubu administration and is expected to stretch approximately 750 kilometres, linking several coastal states across southern Nigeria.
The project is estimated to cost about ₦15 trillion upon completion, with sections of the highway already nearing completion.
Construction of the road began in March 2024 and has attracted significant public attention. While the government has described it as a transformative infrastructure project expected to boost connectivity, trade and economic development, it has also faced criticism and legal challenges over issues including its cost, route alignment, environmental concerns and compensation for affected property owners.
Despite the controversies, the Federal Government has maintained that the project remains a key component of its long-term infrastructure development agenda.
