Cooking Gas Supply Rises to 5,332 Tonnes Daily in Nigeria, Prices Remain Above N1,000/kg

Nigeria’s daily supply of liquefied petroleum gas, commonly known as cooking gas, increased to 5,332 tonnes in July 2026, marking the highest supply level recorded in the 13-month period covered by data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

The latest figures contained in the NMDPRA’s July 2026 midstream and downstream statistics showed that LPG supply increased from 5,100 tonnes per day in June to 5,332 tonnes per day in July.

The increase was driven largely by domestic sources, which supplied 4,373 tonnes per day, representing about 82 per cent of total LPG supply during the month.

NLNG/SEPNU emerged as the largest individual supplier, providing 2,031 tonnes per day through vessels, accounting for about 38 per cent of total supply.

Other processing plants supplied 1,513 tonnes per day through trucks, while the Dangote Petroleum Refinerycontributed 829 tonnes per day. Imports accounted for 959 tonnes per day, representing approximately 18 per cent of total supply.

The July figure represents a significant improvement from the 4,500 tonnes per day recorded in July 2025.

Supply subsequently rose to 5,000 tonnes in August before falling to 3,900 tonnes in September. It then increased to 4,500 tonnes in October, 5,000 tonnes in November and 5,200 tonnes in December.

In January 2026, LPG supply reached 5,100 tonnes per day but declined to 4,700 tonnes in February and March, 4,500 tonnes in April and 4,100 tonnes in May.

The figure recovered to 5,100 tonnes in June before reaching the new 5,332-tonne daily record in July.

Despite the increase in supply, cooking gas prices have remained relatively high across Nigeria, with retail prices yet to consistently fall below N1,000 per kilogramme following the sharp increase recorded earlier in the year.

Prices have, however, dropped considerably from the reported peak of N2,400 per kilogramme, with consumers currently paying roughly N1,300 to N1,600 per kilogramme in some locations, depending on the market and location.

The pricing situation has also triggered concerns over the distribution chain.

The Nigerian LNG Limited recently accused some marketers of contributing to the sharp increase in LPG prices by purchasing the product from the company at considerably lower prices before selling it to consumers at much higher rates.

NLNG Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Adeleye Falade, said during a media briefing in Lagos that the company had sold LPG to buyers for between N800 and N900 per kilogramme when retail prices reportedly reached N2,400.

According to Falade, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority had indicated that the product should ultimately sell for around N1,000 to N1,200 per kilogramme after transportation and other associated costs.

“When the product was being sold at N2,400 in the market, guess how much they were lifting it from us? It was between N800 and N900 per kg.”

Falade attributed the sharp increase to supply shortages, artificial scarcity and distortions within the distribution chain, rather than NLNG’s pricing.

The latest NMDPRA figures suggest that domestic LPG supply is strengthening, with locally sourced gas now accounting for the majority of cooking gas available in the Nigerian market.

However, the continued gap between rising supply and retail prices means consumers may have to wait longer before the increased domestic availability translates fully into lower cooking gas prices.
