A Nigerian woman has sparked debate online after arguing that men who earn less than their wives should take on more household responsibilities, particularly when the woman is responsible for financially providing for the family.
In a video shared on X, the woman claimed that an increasing number of Nigerian men are deliberately seeking relationships with financially successful women because of what they can contribute to a household.
She described such men as “gold diggers” and argued that women who earn more than their husbands should not automatically be expected to handle most of the domestic responsibilities.
“I’ve said it before: most Nigerian men are gold diggers. They’re not going for girls that do not have anything to offer anymore.”
She claimed some men are now actively seeking wealthy women and marrying them because of their financial position.
The woman then questioned why a woman who provides financially for her household should also be expected to take responsibility for tasks such as cooking, washing plates and maintaining the home.
“If I have money and my husband doesn’t have, he’s now expecting me to wash plates? Oga, you will wash plates.”
She argued that financial contribution and domestic responsibilities should be considered together when couples decide how to share duties in marriage.
“I will not provide, come home, bear children for you, keep your home, and wash plates.”
Her comments have generated discussion around gender roles, financial expectations and household responsibilities in Nigerian relationships and marriages.
While some people believe domestic duties should be shared according to individual circumstances, regardless of who earns more, others argue that a couple’s financial contributions, work schedules and other responsibilities should influence how household tasks are divided.
