A Nigerian nurse working in a federal hospital has sparked a debate on social media after revealing that she earns about ₦270,000 monthly despite being a Level 9 officer.
The nurse, identified on X as @NwakuduJessoca, said she has received the same monthly salary for the past two years since beginning her nursing career.
In a post that went viral, she expressed frustration over what she described as poor remuneration for healthcare workers, saying the reality of her earnings often surprises people who assume nurses in federal hospitals earn significantly more.
Her disclosure has triggered discussions about the salaries, career progression and welfare of government-employed nurses in Nigeria.
Some X users criticised the government over what they described as inadequate pay for healthcare professionals, while others advised the nurse to consider seeking employment opportunities abroad.
Others, however, argued that government employment offers benefits such as job security, pensions and other long-term incentives that may not be available to workers in the private sector.
One user, Wuraola, wrote:
“Level 9 in this same hospital is still not getting up to 270k tbh, so do crazy.”
Another user, Gbenga, questioned the expected salary progression for government employees, asking:
“Nurse level 9 how much you wan dey collect before I think government workers get promoted every 3 years.”
A user identified as Dalton Brown highlighted the retirement benefits associated with some government positions, while Flow With Eze argued that job security should also be considered when comparing government salaries with other forms of employment.
Another commenter, Ibrahim, urged the nurse to remain grateful for her earnings and focus on those earning less.
The nurse’s disclosure has renewed conversations online about healthcare worker remuneration in Nigeria, particularly the salaries of nurses employed by federal institutions.
However, individual salaries can vary depending on factors including cadre, institution, allowances, deductions, years of service and applicable government salary structures. The figure disclosed by the nurse should therefore not be treated as the standard salary for every Level 9 federal nurse in Nigeria.
The post has continued to generate debate over whether government remuneration adequately reflects the responsibilities and training required of Nigerian healthcare professionals.
