The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for allegedly extorting unsuspecting candidates.
The Board disclosed this in its bulletin on Monday, saying the action formed part of its renewed efforts to tackle fraudulent practices and misconduct within the admission and examination system.
JAMB said the sanction demonstrated that its campaign against the exploitation of candidates was not limited to external fraudsters, as employees found abusing their positions would also face disciplinary action.
“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for extorting unsuspecting candidates, in further demonstration of its renewed commitment to flushing out bad eggs from the system,” the Board stated.
The examination body did not disclose the identity of the affected staff member or provide details about the alleged extortion.
JAMB, however, warned its employees against engaging in activities that could undermine the credibility of the Board or exploit candidates and members of the public.
It said staff members found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with established regulations.
“The Board noted that the action sends a clear and unequivocal message that its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct applies to everyone, irrespective of status or position,” the statement added.
The Board reiterated that it would not shield employees who abuse the trust placed in them by candidates or members of the public.
The development comes as JAMB continues to strengthen measures aimed at protecting candidates from fraud and unauthorised practices surrounding its examinations, admissions and other services.
