The death of Mary Habila, a 26-year-old physiotherapist attached to the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences (DUFUMS) and on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works, has continued to attract nationwide attention as investigations remain ongoing.
The incident, which occurred in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has generated widespread public debate, with authorities, the family and other stakeholders offering differing positions on how the matter should proceed.
Timeline of Events
According to available information, Mary travelled to Ebonyi State with other officials of the Federal Ministry of Works on June 24, 2026, for an official assignment under the supervision of Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.
Members of the delegation were accommodated in staff chalets located within the minister’s country home in Uburu. Officials have clarified that the accommodation serves as a guest facility for ministry personnel and is not the minister’s personal residence.
On the evening of June 26, Mary was reportedly seen by her colleague and close friend, Anita Baaki, after returning from getting her hair done.
According to Baaki’s sworn affidavit before the Ebonyi State High Court, Mary visited her room, showed off her new hairstyle and they spent some time chatting.
Before leaving, Mary reportedly said:
“I am tired. I want to take a shower before sleeping.”
Baaki said that was the last time she saw her alive.
How Her Body Was Discovered
The following morning, Mary reportedly failed to come out of her room.
After repeated phone calls and knocks on her door went unanswered, Baaki alerted domestic staff members.
When searches around the premises proved unsuccessful and the room remained locked from the inside, staff forced the door open.
Mary was reportedly found lying unconscious on the floor near the entrance of the room.
She was rushed to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed that she was dead on arrival.
Family Opposes Autopsy
