Nigerian comedian MC Lively has criticised media personality Daddy Freeze over his recent comments about Peter Obiand a luxury Hermès handbag reportedly carried by the former Anambra State governor’s wife.
Daddy Freeze had said he had no issue with Margaret Obi carrying an expensive handbag, noting that Peter Obi was already wealthy before entering government.
He, however, questioned whether luxury items associated with Obi’s family were consistent with the presidential candidate’s public image of financial prudence, particularly his reported comments about owning only one pair of shoes and one watch.
MC Lively disagreed with that argument, questioning whether Peter Obi had ever suggested that his wife was expected to maintain the same lifestyle or limit her personal spending because of his own choices.
“When did Peter Obi say that his wife is helping him use one shoe and one watch? Did he say that his wife is impoverished? Did you not already say that he is a billionaire? He made money before government.”
The comedian also addressed another argument he said had become common among some Nigerians, that they would not support Peter Obi because of the behaviour of some of his supporters.
MC Lively argued that the conduct of individual supporters should not determine how Nigerians assess a political candidate or his record in government.
He pointed to issues such as insecurity, fuel prices and what he described as years of neglect, saying Nigerians have legitimate reasons to express frustration with the country’s political leadership.
“It has become a regular thing to say, ‘I don’t support Peter Obi because of a supporter.’ I think that’s ridiculous.”
MC Lively further questioned whether critics who focus on the behaviour of Obi’s supporters have substantive objections to his record in government or his political plans.
“You don’t have anything to say about his time in government, you don’t have anything to say about the future of your children.”
He also challenged the criticism of wealthy individuals entering public office, arguing that personal wealth accumulated before holding office should not automatically be viewed negatively.
According to the comedian, Nigerians should be able to distinguish between a politician’s personal wealth and how the person conducts himself while serving in government.
“Is this not what Nigerians are supposed to be aspiring to? To be someone who makes money and then goes to government to serve? Is that not what governance is?”
The comments come amid an ongoing social media debate over the reported value of a Hermès handbag carried by Margaret Obi.
Daddy Freeze’s earlier comments focused on the perceived contrast between Peter Obi’s public image of prudence and luxury associated with his family, while MC Lively has argued that the discussion should not be used to question Obi’s political candidacy without examining his record and policies.

The debate remains a matter of differing opinions, with neither the handbag’s widely reported value nor its purchase details establishing any connection to public funds.
