American singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after a UK court sentenced him to eight months in jail, suspended for one year, over a nightclub brawl in London in 2023.
The sentence was handed down on Monday at Southwark Crown Court in London after the 37-year-old musician pleaded guilty to affray, a public order offence involving violence.
Brown will not serve the prison term immediately but could be jailed if he commits another offence during the one-year suspension period.
The judge, Tony Baumgartner, said the incident was serious because the violence occurred in a crowded nightclub, creating risks not only for the alleged victim but also for other people present.
“Violence of this kind in a crowded nightclub is serious,” the judge said while delivering the sentence.
Brown arrived at the court wearing a black face mask and a black cap. He had entered his guilty plea during a court appearance in July.
Prosecutors accused the singer and his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, who is also an American national, of carrying out what they described as a vicious and unprovoked attack on a man inside the London nightclub.
According to the prosecution, Brown allegedly used a glass bottle to strike the victim on the head twice during the altercation.
The victim was reportedly hit several times with the bottle before being chased, punched and kicked.
The incident occurred on February 19, 2023, at Tape, a private members’ club in central London, while Brown was on tour in the United Kingdom.
Brown’s guilty plea to affray brought an end to the need for a trial on several other charges, including attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon, identified as a bottle. He had previously denied those allegations.
The suspended sentence means Brown will remain out of prison for now, provided he complies with the conditions of his sentence and does not commit another offence during the suspension period.
The case has drawn attention to the legal consequences facing the Grammy-winning singer over the alleged nightclub violence in London.
