American singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after a UK court handed him an eight-month suspended prison sentence over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.
The 37-year-old R&B star was sentenced on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to one count of affray in July. His sentence was suspended for 12 months, meaning he will not serve the prison term immediately but could face imprisonment if the sentence is activated under the applicable legal conditions.
The case relates to an incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, central London, where prosecutors said Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a glass tequila bottle. CCTV footage presented in court showed the attack, which prosecutors described as serious and dangerous.
Diaw sustained injuries to his head and knee following the incident.
Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, was also involved in the attack, according to prosecutors. Akinlolu received a four-month suspended prison sentence, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 towards prosecution costs.
During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner warned that repeatedly striking someone on the head with a glass bottle could have caused more serious injuries.
The judge also made it clear that Brown’s fame and commercial success did not entitle him to preferential treatment in court.
Brown had initially faced more serious charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Those charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to affray.
The singer was arrested in Manchester in May 2025 after returning to the UK for a concert, more than two years after the nightclub incident. He was subsequently released on bail while the case proceeded.
The suspended sentence means Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment, although the court has imposed a custodial sentence that could take effect if the relevant legal conditions are met during the suspension period.
The ruling brings the criminal proceedings over the 2023 nightclub incident to a conclusion at the sentencing stage, with both Brown and Akinlolu receiving suspended prison terms rather than being sent directly to prison.
