Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has explained why he chose to visit the Oba of Iwo in Osun State despite allegations and criticism that have surrounded the traditional ruler.
The activist, who was recently honoured with the Atayese of Iwoland chieftaincy title, said he decided to meet the monarch in person because he prefers to verify claims for himself rather than rely on rumours circulating online.
Speaking in a video shared on social media, VDM said he had come across several allegations against the king, including claims that he sponsors bandits and jihadists. However, he stressed that he did not want to form an opinion without first seeking the facts.
“People said a lot of horrible things about the king, that he sponsors bandits and jihad. That’s why I went there because I don’t judge by what people say,” he said.
VDM also made light of his newly conferred traditional title, joking that he had already forgotten its name shortly after receiving the honour.
According to him, people had asked him to mention his chieftaincy title, forcing him to look it up again because he could not immediately remember it.
“Now that I’m a king, there are a lot of things I can’t do anymore. They asked me my chieftaincy title today, I’ve forgotten it already. I had to go read it again. I almost said tatashe,” he joked.
He added that the title comes with new responsibilities and that he is still getting used to his new status.
VDM maintained that he believes in personally verifying information before drawing conclusions, especially when serious allegations are involved.
His comments have since generated mixed reactions on social media, with some users commending his approach to verifying claims, while others continued to debate both his visit to the monarch and the significance of the chieftaincy title.
