A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread reactions online after recounting how a cash inheritance of nearly ₦35 million from her late father allegedly led to the collapse of her marriage.
In a lengthy social media post, the woman claimed the problems began shortly after the inheritance was paid to her. According to her, her husband, who had followed the inheritance process from the beginning, asked how she intended to use the money.
She said she explained that her plans included purchasing land, buying a car, enrolling in a master’s degree programme and investing the remaining funds in her business.
According to the woman, her response did not sit well with her husband, who allegedly questioned what benefit he would receive from the inheritance as her spouse.
She claimed the disagreement later escalated into a serious confrontation after she refused to hand over the money. She alleged that her husband became furious, threatened to marry another woman and accused her of being disrespectful and unwilling to submit to him.
The woman further alleged that a few days later, her husband’s parents visited their home in an attempt to persuade her to transfer the entire inheritance to their son. She said the meeting felt like an ambush and that she pretended to agree with their request before quietly leaving the house later that day with her baby.
According to her account, she initially stayed with a friend before securing a new apartment. She later returned to the matrimonial home while her husband was away to move out her personal belongings, as well as household items she claimed she had purchased with her own income.
She also alleged that her husband subsequently reported her to the police, accusing her of taking his property. However, she said records from her office cooperative showed that the household items had been bought through salary deductions made from her earnings, while her husband was unable to provide proof that he owned them.
The woman disclosed that she later filed for divorce. She claimed that after receiving the divorce papers, her husband began pleading with her to reconsider, insisting that he never intended for the marriage to end and that his earlier threats were only meant to make her more submissive.
She added that the divorce proceedings are now before the court.
Her story has generated intense debate across social media, with many users sharing differing opinions on financial independence in marriage, inheritance rights and the responsibilities of spouses when significant personal assets are involved.
