Real Madrid have completed the signing of highly rated Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a transfer worth up to £120 million (€140 million), making the 19-year-old one of the most expensive footballers ever signed.
The Spanish club confirmed that Diomande has agreed to a seven-year contract, with the overall value of the deal expected to surpass the amount Real Madrid paid Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in 2023 if all performance-related bonuses are triggered.
Paris Saint-Germain had been considered the frontrunners to secure the teenager’s signature but ended their pursuit after RB Leipzig rejected their reported £102.5 million offer. The development paved the way for Real Madrid to finalise the blockbuster transfer.
If the full transfer fee is activated, Diomande will rank among the four most expensive transfers in football history, behind only Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Liverpool striker Alexander Isak. The deal also sets a new record for an African player, eclipsing the £72 million Arsenal paid Lille for fellow Ivorian Nicolas Pepe in 2019.
Before moving to Spain, Diomande had also attracted interest from Liverpool, who reportedly submitted a £69 million bid earlier in the summer. The Premier League club viewed him as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian completed a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.
Diomande becomes Real Madrid’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window under new manager Jose Mourinho. He joins a list of new arrivals that includes Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi as the club continues its squad rebuild.
Speaking after completing the move, the young winger thanked RB Leipzig supporters for their backing during his time in Germany. He described joining Real Madrid as the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition and expressed appreciation to Leipzig’s management for facilitating the transfer despite his existing contract.
He also left the door open for a future reunion with his former club, telling fans that they could meet again in the UEFA Champions League.
Diomande enjoyed a remarkable 2025–26 campaign, winning the Bundesliga Young Player of the Season award after registering 12 league goals and eight assists. Across all competitions, he finished the season with 13 goals and 10 assists, performances that established him as one of Europe’s most sought-after young attacking talents.
On the international stage, the winger represented Ivory Coast at the FIFA World Cup, featuring in all four matches before the African nation was eliminated in the Round of 32 by Norway.
His journey to the top has been rapid. After leaving Ivory Coast, Diomande developed through an academy in the United States before moving to Spanish club Leganes in 2025. Later that year, he secured a transfer to RB Leipzig, where his impressive displays quickly attracted attention from Europe’s elite clubs.
Real Madrid believe their significant investment reflects the club’s long-term strategy of recruiting elite young players capable of becoming world-class stars. Diomande’s pace, dribbling ability, creativity and versatility across both wings made him a priority target for the Spanish giants.
The Ivorian is comfortable operating on either flank, whether cutting inside from the left onto his stronger right foot or stretching defences from the right with his speed and crossing ability.
Club officials are confident his attacking qualities will strengthen the squad, particularly as they seek greater consistency in the right-wing position. His arrival is also expected to complement Real Madrid’s attacking system alongside creative full-backs such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella as the club prepares for the new season.
